Was Maria Reynolds Related To The Schuyler Sisters

Maria Reynolds: The Schuyler Sisters' Long-Lost Cousin?

Alright, gather 'round, folks. Let's dive into a little historical mystery that's like trying to figure out if your great-aunt's friend's neighbor is actually related to you or not. You know, one of those 'six degrees of separation' scenarios that makes you go, "Huh, who knew?"

First things first, who are the Schuyler sisters?

If you've seen the musical 'Hamilton,' you're already familiar with these fabulous ladies. Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy Schuyler were the daughters of a wealthy New York family in the late 1700s. They were known for their wit, charm, and let's face it, they were basically the original 'Mean Girls' of the American Revolution era.

Now, let's talk about Maria Reynolds. She's a bit of a mystery, like that one cousin who shows up at family reunions and no one's quite sure where they fit in. Maria was married to a guy named James Reynolds, who was also a bit of a shady character. Think of him as the cousin who always 'borrows' money and never pays it back.

So, how are Maria and the Schuylers connected?

Well, it's like this. Maria's mother was a woman named Susannah Schuyler. Now, you might be thinking, "Wait a minute, that's a Schuyler name!" And you'd be right. Susannah was the sister of the Schuyler sisters' father, Philip Schuyler. So, that makes Maria their niece. But here's where it gets a bit tricky.

Maria's father was a man named John Johnson. Now, here's where things get a bit like one of those daytime talk show paternity tests. See, there are some records that suggest John Johnson might actually be a John Schuyler, who was Philip's brother. If that's the case, then Maria would be not just a niece, but a sister to the Schuyler sisters. Talk about a plot twist!

But here's the thing, folks. We're talking about historical records, and they can be about as reliable as your great-aunt's memory at a family reunion. Some records say one thing, some say another. It's like trying to figure out who actually started that food fight at the last family gathering.
