How Old Are Cathy And Heathcliff In Wuthering Heights

Age is just a number, right? Not in Wuthering Heights!

So, you've picked up a copy of Wuthering Heights, have you? Great choice! It's like the original Gothic drama, full of passion, revenge, and moody landscapes. But there's one thing that's been bugging you, isn't it? How old are Cathy and Heathcliff, anyway?

Well, grab a cuppa, get comfy, and let's dive into this age-old mystery. Spoiler alert: it's a bit of a wild ride!

Let's start with the basics

Cathy and Heathcliff first meet when they're both around eight years old. They grow up together, fall in love, and then, well, things get a bit complicated. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. Emily Brontë, the author, doesn't give us exact ages. She just drops hints, like a literary game of Cluedo. So, we've got to do a bit of detective work.

Cathy: The eternal teen?

Cathy, our fiery heroine, seems to be stuck in her late teens for most of the story. I mean, she's still calling Heathcliff her "darling" and having tantrums when she's supposed to be a grown woman. But hey, we've all known someone who's a bit of an eternal teen, right?

Here's a fun fact: Cathy's ghost is said to haunt the moors for 30 years. That's right, folks! She's got more staying power than a certain someone's New Year's resolution.

Heathcliff: The ageless wonder

Now, Heathcliff. He's a bit of an enigma. He's found as a starving, homeless child, so who knows how old he really is? Some say he's around the same age as Cathy when they meet. Others think he's older, maybe even in his early twenties.

But here's where it gets weird. Heathcliff seems to age super slowly. I mean, he looks pretty much the same when he's supposed to be in his forties as he did when he was a teenager. Talk about a good skincare routine!

And get this: he dies at the age of 74. That's right, he outlives Cathy by about 40 years. Talk about a tough act to follow!

So, what's the moral of the story?

Well, apart from the whole "love can drive you to do crazy things" thing, I think it's that age is just a number. Cathy and Heathcliff might not age like the rest of us, but their love story sure does. And isn't that what really matters?

So, next time you pick up Wuthering Heights, remember: Cathy and Heathcliff might be stuck in a time warp, but their love story is timeless. And isn't that what makes a good book? Now, who's ready for another cuppa?
