So, there I was, scrolling through Netflix the other night, you know, just casually browsing for something to watch. I'd had a long day, the kids were finally in bed, and I was ready for some me time. I stumbled upon a movie that looked interesting, let's call it "Grown-Up Drama". It had a nice cover, good reviews, and it was... wait for it... rated PG-13. Now, I'm not a teenager anymore, but I thought, "Hey, I can handle that. It's not like they're going to show anything too crazy, right?"
Cut to me, ten minutes into the movie, hiding behind a pillow, squinting at the screen like I was watching a horror film. I mean, sure, it was a drama, but who knew drama could be so... dramatic? I started wondering, why is it that movies like this are still rated PG-13? Shouldn't there be an age rating for grown-ups too?
Age Ratings: A Tale of Two Audiences
Let's face it, the current age rating system is great for parents. It helps them decide what's appropriate for their kids. But what about us grown-ups? We've seen a thing or two, we've lived a little, we've... matured. So, why are we still stuck with the same ratings that are meant for kids?

Think about it. A movie that's rated PG-13 might be fine for a 13-year-old, but it could be a bit much for a 30-year-old who's had a long day at work and just wants to relax. On the other hand, a movie that's rated R might be perfect for a 17-year-old, but it could be a bit tame for a 45-year-old who's seen it all.
Introducing... The "Grown-Up" Rating System
So, I started thinking, what if we had an age rating system just for grown-ups? A system that takes into account the fact that we've seen a few things, we've lived a little, and we're not as easily shocked as we used to be. Here's my proposal:
The ESRB & PEGI Will Keep Rating Games During The Coronavirus
- PG-G: This would be for movies that are generally suitable for all grown-ups. They might have some mild language, mild violence, or mild... other stuff. But nothing too crazy.
- PG-13-G: These movies would be suitable for grown-ups who are still a bit sensitive. They might have some stronger language, some violence, or some... other stuff. But still, nothing too intense.
- R-G: These movies would be suitable for grown-ups who are ready for the real deal. They might have strong language, strong violence, or strong... other stuff. Basically, if you've seen "The Godfather", you can handle it.
- NC-17-G: These movies are for grown-ups who are looking for something... extra. They might have very strong language, very strong violence, or very strong... other stuff. Basically, if you've seen "A Clockwork Orange", you can handle it.
Now, I'm not saying this system is perfect. But it's a start, right? It's a way to acknowledge that grown-ups have different tastes and tolerances than teenagers. And who knows, maybe it could help us find some movies that are actually suitable for us.
So, what do you think? Should we have an age rating system just for grown-ups? Or are we all just big kids at heart? Let me know in the comments. Until then, I'll be over here, hiding behind my pillow, squinting at the TV.
