How Old Was Jose Hernandez When He Went Into Space

So, there I was, mowing my lawn on a sunny afternoon, when I started thinking about space. You know how it is, the hum of the mower, the smell of freshly cut grass, it's like my brain goes into neutral and starts wandering. Anyway, I found myself wondering, "How old was Jose Hernandez when he went into space?" I mean, I know he's a Mexican-American astronaut, but his age when he blasted off? That was a mystery to me.

Now, I'm not one to just let these questions hang out there, so I decided to dive into the rabbit hole of the internet and find out. And let me tell you, folks, Jose Hernandez's story is as inspiring as it is fascinating. Born in French Camp, California, to a family of migrant farm workers, he didn't have it easy. But he had a dream, and that dream was to go to space.

From Farm Worker to Astronaut

You might be thinking, "Sure, that's a nice story, but how old was he when he finally made it to space?" Well, let's rewind a bit. Jose didn't just wake up one morning and decide to be an astronaut. No, he worked hard for it. He joined the Navy, became a mechanic, and then, in 1995, he applied to NASA's astronaut program.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. Jose was 38 years old when he was selected for the program. That's right, he was almost 40 when he started his astronaut training. But did you know that the average age of NASA astronauts is around 34? So, Jose was a bit older than your average space explorer.

Age is Just a Number

But age didn't stop Jose. In fact, it seemed to fuel his determination. He trained hard, and in 2009, at the age of 41, he finally got his chance to go to space. He was part of the crew on the Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-128 mission. Can you believe it? 41 years old and blasting off into space!
