Rick Wakeman: The Eternal Keyboard Wizarding

Alright, gather 'round, 'cause we're about to dive into the musical time machine and figure out just how old Rick Wakeman is. You know, the guy who's been tickling those ivories and making keyboards sing since, well, forever it seems!

Born in the Swinging Sixties

So, let's rewind to 1949, the year our man Rick was born. That's right, he's a baby boomer, born in the same decade as the likes of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. But while they were busy being the Rolling Stones, young Rick was busy being a musical prodigy.

At just 13, he was playing piano on BBC TV and radio. Can you even imagine being that talented that young? I mean, I was still trying to figure out how to tie my shoelaces at that age!

The Six Wives of King Henry VIII

Now, you might be thinking, "Okay, he's old, but how old?" Well, let's fast forward to 1973. Rick was in his mid-twenties, and he did something that's still talked about today. He released an album called "The Six Wives of Henry VIII".

Yep, you heard it right. Rick Wakeman made an entire album inspired by the wives of Henry VIII. And it wasn't just any album, it was a concept album, complete with a suite of music for each wife. I mean, who does that? Only Rick Wakeman, that's who!

From Yes to Wakeman and Back Again

Now, you might be wondering, "What's this got to do with Yes?" Well, Rick Wakeman was the keyboardist for the progressive rock band Yes. He joined them in the early 70s, just around the time he was making musical history with his Henry VIII album.

He left Yes in 1980, but not before leaving his mark on some of their most iconic albums like "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge". Then, in typical Rick Wakeman fashion, he rejoined them in the 90s. Talk about a musical rollercoaster!

Still Going Strong in His 70s

So, here we are, 2023, and Rick Wakeman is still going strong. He's in his 70s now, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him. The guy's got more energy than a room full of toddlers on espresso!

He's still touring, still making music, and still being his quirky, brilliant self. He even did a series of concerts where he played his Henry VIII album live. I mean, who else could pull off a concert dedicated to the wives of Henry VIII?

Rick Wakeman: The Timeless Musician

So, there you have it. Rick Wakeman is old, but he's also timeless. He's been making music since before some of us were even born, and he's still at it. He's a living legend, a musical pioneer, and a true original. And the best part? He's not showing any signs of slowing down.

Next time you hear a keyboard solo that's out of this world, remember, it could very well be Rick Wakeman. After all, he's been wowing us with his musical magic for decades. And who knows? Maybe he'll still be at it when we're all old and gray. Now that's something to look forward to!
