Hey, can we talk about Animal Kingdom for a sec? It’s one of those shows that just grabs you by the collar. You know the chaotic Cody family, right?
They are absolutely nuts, aren't they? The crimes, the lies, the betrayal—it never stops. It’s completely addictive, honestly.
But what about the youngest brother, Deran? He’s the one with the tattoo sleeves and the wild eyes. You just cannot take your eyes off him.

How Old Is Deran When the Show Starts?
So, just how old is this guy when the series kicks off? In the timeline of the show, Deran is around 23 years old. It’s the year 2013, and he’s already deep in the family’s criminal shenanigans.
Think about that for a second. A 23-year-old navigating a world of crime and grifters! He’s basically a toddler in a very dangerous playpen.
He really does look the part too. His youthful energy is immediately apparent. You can totally see his age.
Aging Like a Fine (Criminal) Wine
The show spans a ton of time. Over seven seasons, you watch the boys grow up—or break down. It’s honestly pretty wild to witness.
Time passes so quickly in their world. You don't even notice the years flying by. Before you know it, the kids are adults.
By the time Season 7 rolls around, Deran is in his early 30s. Yeah, about 30 or 31! The years clearly don’t spare the Cody brothers.
Does he look his age? Kind of, actually. He carries that stress like a backpack full of bricks.
The Visual Changes
The makeup and styling tell a huge story. You can literally see the aging process. It’s not just the wrinkles; it's the posture.
In Season 1, he slouches. He looks uncertain. By Season 7, he stands taller—though maybe a bit more tired.
His wardrobe shifts too. He moves from basic tees to more rugged textures. It’s such a subtle but effective touch.
The Voice Changes
Does anyone else notice his voice deepening? It’s a very small detail. But it adds so much to his character.
Animal Kingdom 5×05: “Family Business” – Father Son Holy Gore
The vocal shift perfectly mirrors his aging journey. He sounds older, rougher, and frankly, exhausted. It’s a brilliant piece of casting and direction.
Deran's Role in the Family
He’s often the wildcard, isn't it? Deran loves to stir the pot. But he also has a deeply protective side.
His relationship with his brothers is complicated, to say the least. You love to hate him sometimes. Other times, you just want to give him a huge hug.
When things get hot, Deran is usually the one playing with fire. It’s a dangerous game to play. But he seems to thrive on the chaos.
He constantly tries to prove himself. The pressure must be absolutely suffocating. Yet, he keeps showing up.
Deran and J
Their dynamic is absolutely fascinating to watch. J is the golden child, right? Deran is the misunderstood one.
They fight like cats and dogs. But they always have each other's backs. Blood is thicker than water, after all.
Watching them grow up together is heartwarming. Their bond is genuinely sweet. It contrasts so well with the rest of the family.
Crime and Consequences
Deran's Criminal Arc
His path into crime was never really planned. He just sort of fell into it. It was the only life he knew.
He tries to go straight sometimes. But the family always pulls him back. It’s a tragic cycle, really.
Do you think he ever truly regrets it? Maybe just a little. But he stays loyal to his own.

That means he was about 23 years old when he started filming the show. Isn't it wild that he was basically playing a version of his own age? He absolutely nailed the role of a confused, volatile young man.
He really brings that unhinged energy, doesn't he? From day one, he was giving us genuine scares. We never knew if he was going to smile or explode!
Where Does He End Up?
