How Old Are The Chipmunks From Alvin And The Chipmunks

Alvin, Simon, and Theodore: Ageless Wonderchips

Ever wondered how old those cheeky little chipmunks from Alvin and the Chipmunks are? You're not alone! These furry friends have been entertaining us since the '50s, but pinning down their age is a bit like trying to catch one of their famous acorn stashes - it's not as easy as it seems.

Let's rewind to 1958, when Ross Bagdasarian Sr., a.k.a. David Seville, created the Chipmunks. Alvin, the mischievous leader, and his brothers Simon and Theodore first chattered their way onto vinyl with the hit single "The Witch Doctor." So, if we're counting birthdays, they're pushing 64 this year!

But here's where it gets tricky. The Chipmunks we know and love today aren't the same ones from the '50s. They've been rebooted, reimagined, and even given a CGI makeover. So, are we talking about the original Chipmunks, or the ones from the 2007 live-action movie? Let's dive in.

Original Chipmunks: The OG Wonderchips

The original Chipmunks, created by Bagdasarian, were a novelty act. They were voiced by Bagdasarian himself, using a speeding-up tape recorder trick to achieve their high-pitched, helium-like voices. These Chipmunks were born in the late '50s, making them senior citizens in chipmunk years. But remember, they're chipmunks, not humans - they don't age like we do!

In the '80s, the Chipmunks got a modern makeover with a new animated series, Alvin and the Chipmunks. This time, they were voiced by professional actors and given a more contemporary look. But their core personalities remained the same - Alvin was still the troublemaker, Simon the brainy one, and Theodore the lovable, food-loving goofball.

Modern Chipmunks: The CGI Wonderchips

Fast forward to 2007, and the Chipmunks got their first live-action movie. This time, they were brought to life using CGI, and their voices were provided by Justin Long (Alvin), Matthew Gray Gubler (Simon), and Jesse McCartney (Theodore). These Chipmunks were given a fresh, modern look, but their personalities were still rooted in the original characters.

Since then, they've starred in five movies, with the latest, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, released in 2015. So, if we're talking about the movie versions, they're still pretty young - just teenagers in chipmunk years!

Fun Chipmunk Facts!

Did you know that Ross Bagdasarian Sr. also created The Chipettes, the Chipmunks' female counterparts? They first appeared in 1983 and have been causing their own brand of chaos ever since. And speaking of chaos, did you know that Alvin's catchphrase, "Aaaaaaaaaaalvin!!!" is the longest-running catchphrase in television history?

And here's a fun fact for the music lovers: The Chipmunks have had a total of five songs reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That's more than some human artists! Their first number one hit was "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" in 1958, and their most recent was "Uptown Funk" in 2015, a collaboration with Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars.

So, How Old Are They, Really?

The truth is, the Chipmunks are like a fine wine - they only get better with age! Whether you prefer the original, animated, or CGI versions, they've all got that timeless charm that keeps us coming back for more. So, the next time you're watching Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, remember that they're not just chipmunks - they're living legends!

And hey, if you ever find yourself feeling old, just remember that these little guys have been around for over six decades, and they're still going strong. So, chin up, and keep on chipmunking!
