How Old Are Mlb Bat Boys

Batting Around: The Age of MLB Bat Boys

Ever wondered who's behind the scenes at a Major League Baseball game, making sure the batters are well-equipped? That's right, we're talking about the bat boys. But how old are these youngsters, and what's it like to be part of the action?

First things first, let's clear up a misconception. The term "bat boy" is a bit outdated. Today, MLB teams prefer to use "bat kid" or simply "bat attendant" to be more inclusive. Now that we've got that straight, let's dive into the age range of these youngsters.

From Little Leaguers to High School Seniors

MLB teams typically hire bat attendants who are between 14 and 18 years old. That's right, these kids are still in middle or high school! But don't let their age fool you. These youngsters are passionate about baseball and eager to learn the ins and outs of the game.

Take, for instance, Jack Flaherty, the St. Louis Cardinals' pitcher. Before making it big, he was a bat boy for the Chicago Cubs. Or how about Bryce Harper, the Philadelphia Phillies' outfielder? He too started his baseball journey as a bat boy for the Washington Nationals.

More Than Just Fetching Bats

Being a bat attendant isn't just about fetching bats and keeping the dugout tidy. These kids get a unique behind-the-scenes look at the game, learning from some of the best players in the world. They also get to interact with fans, help with player warm-ups, and even assist with equipment management.

It's not all fun and games, though. The job can be physically demanding, with long hours and quick thinking required. But for many, the perks - like free food, game tickets, and the chance to be part of the action - make it all worthwhile.
